How the wrong environment altered my outlook on being seen

Corporate tech apathy vs. My love for design 💕

I’d love to start by sharing that June 19th marked not only another beautiful Juneteenth celebration, but the 2nd anniversary of my LLC 🥂

By the way, hey, I’m Alyah :)

I’m an artist, designer, and creative director, and this space is my Designer Diaries. I share what it’s actually like building a business in your 20s after a surprise tech layoff + The parts you don’t see in portfolios or pitch decks.

As creatives, we show our “presenation ready work” but rarely the emotional labor or the stories that make us, as we’re becoming artists, finding success and our own sense of wealth.

This reflection space matters to me because we don’t owe perfection to the internet, but we owe honesty to ourselves. Plus, by showing up, we help those looking for hope and a refreshing perspective.

About today’s chat

This reflection chat happened in the middle of starting a challenge around being seen after having several conversations and breakthroughs with the help of my accountability buddy, and since June 10th, I’ve discovered so much more that I wish I could’ve shared about in this spur of the moment chat.

This one is for the girls who were told they weren’t enough, and over time they started to believe it (whole time they not only built but carried in ways they didn’t think were possible).

This is for those who were doing the best in the environment they were in and weren’t given their flowers.

And yes, to be that girl who quotes Lana,

for all my birds of paradise
who never got to fly at night
’cause they were caught up in the dance…

I never really noticed that I had to decide
to play someone’s game, or live my own life

And now I do
I wanna move
out of the black
into the blue
